What is Organic Textile ?
Organic Textile is the products in which the raw material of the fabric used in production is certified as organic and organic standards are observed in all process steps until it is put on the market. To put it more clearly, the fiber used in organic textile products (cotton, linen, wool, etc.) must be certified organic. For this, cotton and flax must be grown with organic agriculture. Each of the processes such as cutting, sewing, dyeing and packaging of the obtained fabric must have separate certificates. In short, a series of control steps are required for organic clothing.
Why Should We Prefer Organic Textile Products?
In fact, there are many reasons to preder textile products that are ready for use after long and arduous processes, which are closely related to our world and our future.
⦁The first of these is that they are sensitive to the environment. Organic textile products are obtained through ecological agriculture that does not harm the environment and protects natural resources. Nature is not harmed during the production phase.
⦁The widespread use of organic textile production helps people working at different stages of the process to protect their health. Because chemical drugs are not included in this production process.
⦁Child labor is not allowed in ecological agriculture. With every organic textile we buy, we also protect children.
⦁The organic textile sector, which offers a sustainable market, can recycle used products and offer them to the market in different ways, which enables us to conscientiously protect natural resources.
⦁Above all, organic clothing protects human health and prevents the formation of skin diseases such as allergies and cancer. Because the chemicals used for softening and weighting in organic textile products are never used.
⦁ Organic textile products are economical, protect your health as well as your budget. Although it is thought to be expensive, organic textile products are actually more economical than their counterparts because they have a longer life. For example, while a garment starts to deteriorate after 10 washes, this number goes up to 100 in an organic fabric.
What are Organic Textile Certificates ?
From bathroom textiles such as towels and bathrobes to bedroom textiles such as sheets, pique, pillows; from clothing products such as skirts, blouses, underwear; The products we use in many different areas, from curtains, armchairs, chairs to upholstery fabrics, must have various certificates in order to be sold as “organic”.
Just like we do when buying organic food products, we need to pay attention to these certificates when purchasing organic textile products.
So, what are these organic textile certificates?
Some of the organic textile certificates given by the organizations assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in Turkey are as follows:
⦁ GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This standard covers the production, processing, packaging, labeling, trade and distribution of textile products made of at least 70% certified organic natural fiber.
⦁ OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Contains prohibited or restricted raw materials and parameters related to health precautions. Manufacturers of dyes and raw materials used in textile products with this standard are responsible for undertaking that the harmful raw materials in the Oeko-Tex® 100 standard list are not used in their production or are used within the permitted rates.
Organic Baby Clothing and Textile Products
Organic Baby Clothing and Textile Products
Organic dressing is actually a process that positively affects the whole world and humanity when we approach it with a holistic perspective. However, when it comes to babies, we see that the use of organic certified textile products is mandatory. The laws do not allow the production of baby textiles without the OEKO-TEX certificate. The biggest reason for this is that children’s skin is 5 times thinner than adults and therefore they are at greater risk against chemicals.
For this reason, in order to ensure that babies with sensitive skin come into contact with as little chemicals as possible for their health, parents from the hospital exit to the baby blanket; should take care to use certified products from muslin to toys.
However, in addition to organic certifications, there are some points that need attention and are often overlooked.
Paint is more important than fabric!
When buying baby clothes, care should be taken that the fabric is 100% cotton and not a synthetic fabric such as polyester. However, it is also very important what kind of dye the baby textiles are made of natural fabrics such as cotton, wool or silk. We can even say that it is more important. Because the dye is absorbed by the skin as a result of perspiration. For this reason, you should make sure that organic dyes are used in the baby products you buy.
Watch out for the white fabric!
White fabric is not found naturally in nature. The color of the fabric obtained from cotton and linen varies according to the color of the plant, but is beige and brown tones. To obtain a white color, the fabrics are bleached. This process is done with chemicals. It is quite unhealthy for the fabrics that are bleached with the help of chlorine to touch the skin.
Because long-term exposure to chlorine increases the rate of cancer. For this reason, you should wash the white clothes you bought at least 3 times before using them. You should make sure that the white baby products you buy are bleached with organic certified dyes.
You will see that GOTS Certified organic dyes are used in our white fabric muslin covers. You can choose Lucca & Milka muslins for your babies with peace of mind.
When shopping for your baby from a different place, please pay attention to whether the same certificates have been obtained. Do not rely on statements such as 100% organic, which do not have a label but are used for marketing purposes.
